2011 Quicksilver Downlow

So the time has come again for the Quicksilver Downlow. Its always a great day filled with friends, bands, BBQ, sun and snowboarding! The park is shut for several days in order to get ready for the event. Obstacles are built up bigger and scarier then ever before and are let loose for the riders to shred. It was the first year double corks were landed in Ontario, which got the crowd and other riders hyped up. Things just got out of control you could say.

They started with a street inspired closeout rail with drop, which was a new feel for the downlow and it worked out well.
Next was a best trick on the 140 foot rail which only a couple people made it to the end but unbelievably one rider did a noseslide while grabbing nose and indy...crazy, i know.
Then it moved onto the 62 foot jump, cut out for added dangerous look to it. As I mentioned before a couple double corks and so much rotation I couldn't even begin to add it together.
Then onto the always fun water feature, except this year no one even touched the water. It was the goal post feature with a pool cut out under it, amazing things went down, and Jamie's bad fall stopped the session before it got too out of hand, hope he recovers quick!

Overall it was a great end to the season, and I cant wait for next year.

Just a little update with some new shooting days. Out with Dialogue once again to some spots in Toronto. Weather has been quite nice as of late, so we took advantage of the sunshine and got some shots!

Mt. Cascade Contest/ Ottawa!

So Rob Madill (Union, Capita, Ashbury...rep if you are not familiar) asked me to join the team riders (Brad Hesson, Matt Bujok, Andrew Skelhorn, Brad Gauley, etc.) to a big air step down contest at Mt. Cascade in Quebec, and have a fun packed night in ottawa then shoot some rails in the ottawa area.

So the contest went well with Matt Bujok placing third and Andrew Skelhorn finishing second. It was a fun jump with a lot of falls and a lot of spins. In the end it worked out for everyone! We all had a blast. Turns out after a day full of turning screws and riding gets everyone pretty tired, so a nice relaxing night for some, others took in the sights and sounds of the Ottawa nightlife!

The next day we all got up, packed the cars and headed out looking for spots around Ottawa. Found a couple spots, had a fun session on one spot (which you can see below), then found another nice rail, but soon as everything was set up we got asked to leave because the elderly people were getting frightened and confused as to what was happening.
Overall, awesome trip.

Hitting the streets.

Toronto Still has quite alot of snow laying around, and that was before this supposed storm of the century that in the end gave us maybe 10cm if that. So with the fact that there was snow on the ground and urban things to hit I joined the Dialogue team once again to capture some action!
Jesse Greer came down to join Matt Bujok and Brad Hesson to get some tricks landed for the new upcoming dialogue flick.

Dialogue in Toronto

Here we go again. The season is is full force and Toronto has got a couple heavy snowfalls in the past week or two, which in turn means that the rarely hittable toronto spots are there for the taking. The guys at Dialogue have been filming lots lately for the newest addition to the Dialogue video collection. Its sure to be a seriously good time for any who watch, with a mix of park footage, jumping, maybe a little off trail if were lucky, and of course lots of urban riding!

The other day I went shooting with Mark Goodall, Brady Swartz, and Bradley Hesson. The day started off in a whiteout, but later cleared to be an amazing day. Had a blast with the crew, and these are some things that came out of it.

Early Season Shooting

Went out and shot with the Dialogue crew the other night. The spot was basically some bleachers with a nice round rail at the top. We used the winch to get up to speed, and the guys did their thing, and a lots of amazing tricks were landed.

High Cascade Day 1

So the time has come for me to visit High Cascade Snowboard Camp! Today was technically the second day, but we'll call it the first just because it was the first day on hill shooting.
Had some lectures and talks with some pro photographers which may or may not include Andy Wright, Tim Zimmerman, Trevor Graves, Bud Fawcett, Mike Yoshida and Christy Chaloux. Just a small cast of big photo stars, here to teach us the trick of the trade and show off their best work.

So since it was the first time up to the top of the mountain, i didnt know quite what to expect. I mean we've all seen the videos that come out of HCSC with tricks going down left, right and centre with a huge line up of pros and other such talented snowboarders. And to tell you, thats exactly what its like in person. Soo many things happening all around you, having a hard time trying to focus on one feature.

But in the end, i feel like i scanned the place pretty well and got a good number of shots. I got the lay of the land down, and ready to go for the next several days. Its only been one day, soo much more to come in the future!

Watkins Glen Race Report

So this weekend, I travelled to Watkins Glen New York to watch and shoot some racing. Many different kinds of cars racing, from Ferraris, to open wheeled Formula cars. Things got a little crazy at times with cars spinning out into walls, and others climbing onto their opponents cars. In the end the races were all action packed, and lots of racing fun. My step dad Jeremy was the reason we were down there, he is number 00 in the red Formula B car in most of these photos. He had a successful weekend, winning one race and coming second in the second race.
The racing world is a very fasted paced and fun thing to experience, I hope everyone can experience it at least once in their life. Just remember to get as close to the track as possible and get ready to cover your ears. One of the coolest things life has to offer.

Winner of the Transworld "Your Turn Photo Contest"

So this actually happened several weeks ago, but i figured I would wait till I could confirm things with Transworld and High Cascade Snowboard Camp. I have been talking to the Associate Photo Editor of Transworld Snowboarding in the past few weeks, seeing if this is actually true and happening.
The breakdown of the contest goes as follows: Anybody and everybody would submit their own "Season's Best" photos onto the TWS website, and this would continue for several months until the people at TWS would pick a winner and show some honorable mentions. I submitted two photos, two of those photos were posted on this blog, one was of Brad Hesson doing a bs nosepress in the streets of toronto. The other was of Spencer Kaleb doing a huge air in the Downlow contest.
Clearly they preferred the shot of Brad, considering it won the whole contest! There was some tough competition that i was up against, but luckily and thankfully i came out on top. Never would I have thought I could win a photo contest put on by transworld snowboarding. There are many many good photographers out there and im glad to be considered one of them.
I will be heading to HCSC August 5-10 to take part in their summer photo workshop week, where i will be working and shooting along some highly acclaimed snowboard photographers and other people who are deep in the snowboard industry. Should be an amazing experience and I cant wait to take part in it. Its a fantastic opportunity to do something big in the snowboard photography world.

Colourful=fun

So this if from a recent photo shoot, originally supposed to just a basic black and white shoot. A little bit more low key trying to keep things dark. Then i discovered the fact that i could use the flashlight app on my iphone to spice things up a little. After trying several different colours and shutter speeds, finally got the the final product that you see. I feel like its still quite dark and mysterious but still has a little kick for some fun to it, because thats what its all about!

Sunday presented itself with the Downlow contest at Mount St. Louis moonstone. Its one of the biggest contests of the year in ontario and the best all around the province come out to show their stuff. The park is completely overhauled to accommodate the skill level of these riders and it certainly showed when first looking at most of the obstacles. First starting off with the gap to flat box, gap to down box. At first riders were taking some pretty hard falls but once they got the hang of it tricks were getting wild. Next the little booter, once again tricks were being thrown left right and centre. After that was the flat down square rail. Who would have thought that someone could beat a gap front 270 indy to boardslide or even a gap front blunt same way? but somehow they were beaten. Pause for lunch and a side of heavy metal of course. Then the big booter. Trick after trick were landed including a double backflip by Matty Bujok which was huge. Then time for some kids to get techy on the stair set. Bagels, 360s, pretzels, tailslides and indiangivers basically anything you can think of were successfully landed and with ease some could say. Then the big bertha of an obstacle, the pole jam like to a 40 or 50 foot death gap. At first a little unsure if people were actually going to hit it at all or not. Then it started and things were done never thought possible. Started with a backflip off the box here to a back 3 off the tube there and slowly worked its way to the winning trick; a front blunt 270 same way done by dialogue's own Pat Hrivnak. INSANE.

That is a sum up of the whole day basically. Now you were basically there if you missed actually being there. And if you were there i bet you just had deja vu. Weird isnt it?

Hey, how goes it folks?
Havent been shooting too much lately, ive been too busy getting bills paid, which is equally as fun!
But I did attend a pre season snowboard session last night. Which means that snowboarding and snowboarding photos are coming soon enough!
Also just been doing real estate jobs. Which isnt too exciting for most.
And then a little side project i had in my head for awhile. turned out pretty neat i suppose. Some things could have been a little better, but what can you do? Why dont you have a look!

Dialogue "This Is Awesome" Premier.

Hey guys. Just letting in on a little information regarding the Dialogue Headwear premier party. "This is Awesome" is premiering tomorrow October 15th at XS nightclub. It is a 19+ event so all you older than 19, show up because it is going to be amazing.

I shot a lot with Dialogue all last season, and they are an amazing group of guys that just wanna have an awesome time while snowboarding! Its was truly a great season and some of the photo evidence are in the sports section of the main site.

Hopefully you can make it out to the premier because its a guaranteed good time.

First New Blog Post!

Hey! How goes it everyone?
First post on the new blog. Hope everyone is enjoying the new site. Thanks to Yuri for that. If you need any sort of Media work that isnt photography (cause you come to me for that) then contact yuri! www.yurisgd.com

This will be an awesome blog which you should follow very closely. especially with this winter season fast approaching, new photos of shoots, events and anything and everything you can think of in that head of yours, so keep this a favourite.

It will mostly be photography posts, but obviously there is that odd thing that i must share with people and what better way?
